KSC Softball Splits with Southern ME

'GORHAM, ME   –  Sophomore Ang Cote (Windham, ME) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th to give the University of Southern ME Huskies a 2-1 win in the opener, but senior Shauna Mullen (Hooksett, N.H.) hit a walk-off home run in the nightcap to lift the Keene State College Owls to an 8-7 triumph in the nightcap of a Little East Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Towers' Field.

 

With the split, Southern ME now stands at 22-10 overall and 9-5 in the LEC, while Keene State is 20-11 and 8-6. The teams return to action on Tuesday in the opening round of the conference tournament. Game pairings will be determined following tomorrow's league doubleheader between Plymouth State and UMA Boston.

 

In the first game, Southern ME freshman Kristi Steward (Norridgewock, ME) was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first inning and scored on a single by junior Darci Holland (Bucksport, ME). The Huskies maintained the 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth, when junior Nikki Foote stroked a two-out home run to tie the contest at 1-1.

 

The score reMEd unchanged until the bottom of the 10th inning, when Kristen Tong's (Swanzey, N.H.) sacrifice fly scored Cote to give the Huskies the 2-1 triumph. Sophomore Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, MA.) fanned 10 and scattered three hits to earn the complete game win.

 

In the nightcap, Keene State freshman Abby Blanchette (Webster, N.H.) ripped a bases-loaded triple in the first inning to help the Owls build a 4-0 lead. Southern ME tied the affair at 4-4 in the fifth, but Mullen rocketed a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame, and the Owls added a single run in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead through six innings of play.  

 

Southern ME rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 7-7 and set the stage for Mullen's late-game heroics.

 

Sophomore Stephanie Carter (Cohoes, N.Y.), who retired the lone batter she faced in the top of the seventh, earned the win.
