KEENE, N.H. 1/24/04 - Katie Lunnin (South Boston, Mass.) had a
game-high 29 points, including a pair of key three-pointers in the
closing minutes of play to lead the UMass-Dartmouth women's
basketball team to a come-from-behind 70-68 Little East Conference
victory over host Keene State College on Saturday.
It was the fourth straight loss for the Owls (7-9, 2-4) while
UMass-Dartmouth (7-9, 3-3 LEC) posted its first win ever against
KSC. The Owls had won the previous 12 meetings against the
Corsairs since joining the LEC in the 1997-98 season.
Andrea Arsenault (Dover, N.H.), who hit seven-of-nine shots from
the field, had 17 points to lead the Owls. Sarah Begnoche
(Millville, Mass.) added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds,
Cathy Mechare (Falls Village, Conn.) scored 11 points, and Stacey
Morse (Lebanon, N.H.) finished with 10 points and seven
rebounds.
KSC led by as many as 14 points (19-5) early in the game.
Bridget Bowes (Mansfield, Mass.) hit a three-pointer at the buzzer
to give UMD a 36-35 lead at the break.
Arsenault gave KSC a four-point lead (66-62) with 2:37 to
play. But Lunnin, who netted seven of her 10 shots behind the
arc., hit back-to-back treys to put the Corsairs up 68-66 at the
1:25 mark. Arsenault's lay-up tied the game 68-68 with 25
second to go. KSC' s Brittany Faulkner (Lebanon, N.H.) fouled
Casey Ridge (Quincy, Mass.). Ridge hit both her free throws
with 13 second left to put UMD up for good (70-68).
Keene State had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds,
but Faulkner missed a lay-up and Morse couldn't hit a follow up
shot as time expired.
Keene State hosts eighth ranked Eastern Conn. State University
in a LEC contest on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).
