KEENE, N.H. 10/5/04- Keene State College came-from-behind to
defeat Rhode Island College 3-1 in a highly contested Little East
Conference women's volleyball match played Tuesday evening at
Spaulding Gym.
After dropping the first game 28-30, the Owls came back to take
the next three games 30-25, 30-27, and 31-29.
Keene State held a 29-24 lead in the deciding game. The
Anchorwomen reeled off the next five points to tie the score at
29-all. But with Genna Florkowski (East Northport, N.Y.), the Owls
were able to get the final two points to win the match.
"It was a very tight match and we were able to maintain our
composure and get the big points when we needed them," said KSC
Coach Matora Fiorey. "I'm really proud how the team played
tonight."
Junior outside hitter Shelly Ellis (Hampton, N.H.) led the Owls
with 15 kills, four service aces and 18 digs. Florkowski had 14
kills, two service aces and nine digs and freshman setter Kelly
Yankowski (Turners Falls, Mass.) finished the match with 46
assists, 10 digs and six blocks.
Kari Geisler (Deerfield, N.H.) top RIC with 19 kills. Erin Miga
(Cranston, R.I.) added 12 kills and eight blocks and setter Amy
Souza (Tiverton, R.I.) finished with 43 assists.
It is the first time all season Keene State (4-7, 2-3 LEC) has
won two straight matches. R.I. College falls to 8-13 (3-2 LEC).
KSC is at the Springfield Tournament on Saturday.
