Track: O'Brien Shines at LEC/Alliance Meet

'GORHAM, MAINE 2/14/04 - The Keene State College women's team finished second and the Owl men's squad placed third at the Little East Conference/Alliance Indoor Track Championships held at the Southern Maine Field House on Saturday.

 

The Host Huskies claimed both women's and men's titles with 199.25 and 145 points respectively. 

 

The Keene State women tallied 160 points.  Junior Shannon O'Brien (Tilton, N.H.) had an outstanding day for the Owls finishing first in the 600-meter (1:41.61), and 1,000-meter (3:13.64) races.  She was also a member of the winning 4x400 (4:20.59) and 4x800 (10:14.13) relays and placed fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (9.93).

 

Nicole Geyselaers (Cheshire, Conn.) had first places finishes in the 55-meter dash (7.43), triple jump (34-11.00), and a second in the long jump (17-03.25).  Freshman Stephanie Westcott (Chester, Vt.) also placed first in the 3,000-meters (11:03.57).  Laurie Yorgensen (Wethersfield, Conn.) placed second in the 800 (2:30.68) and 1,500 (4:50.16) and Erin Landon (Hampton, Conn.) was the runner-up in the 600 (1:44.09).

 

In field events, Ellen Banning (Hillsboro, N.H.) was second (35-02.25) and Lynn Therrien (Rochester, N.H.) was third (34-02.75) in the shot put while Candice Brown (Londonderry, N.H.) took second in the weight throw (43-07.75). 

 

The KSC Men's team (96 points) was edged by R.I. College (99 points) for second place at the meet. Junior Dave Bridgewater (Unionville, Conn.) defended his titles with victories in the 600-meter (1:23.46) and 1,000-meter (2:35.29) races.

 

Josh Ferenc (Westmoreland, N.H.) took first in the 3,000 (8:54.18) and a second in a third in the 1,500 (4:06.20).  Ryan Gough (Billerica, Mass.) topped the field in the 1,500 (4:02.52) and was second in the 800 (2:00.64).

 

In LEC scoring, both Southern Maine men's and women's teams defended their championships.   Men's scoring:  USM (166), ECSU (111), RIC (102), KSC (82) and UMD (58).  Women's scoring: USM (217), KSC (175), ECSU (73), UMD (45), and RIC (26).
