FORT MYERS, FLA. 3/18/04 - The Keene State College
softball team improved its Spring Week record to 6-2 with a pair of
wins on Thursday at Fort Myers, Fla.
Junior Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.) tossed a complete
game three-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead KSC to a 5-2 win
over Wheaton (Mass.) College in its opener. McLoughlin, who
notched her second win this spring, gave up no hits through the
first four innings.
Playing against the team that knocked them out of the NCAA
Tournament last year, the Owls took advantage of a couple of Lyon
errors to score two runs in the first.
KSC added two more runs in the third on a RBI triple by Abby Collis
(Wynantskill, N.Y.) and a run producing hit from Emily Crompton
(Concord, N.H.). Amanda Foote (Hudson, N.H.) capped the Owls
attack with her first-ever home run in the fourth.
Jennifer Smith (Salem, Mass.) pitched a complete game four
hitter as the Owls defeated Trinity (Conn.) College 4-1 in their
second game. Smith didn't allow an earned run and struck out
four to pickup her second win of the week.
Collis had a two-run double in the bottom of the first to give
KSC a 2-1 lead. Sarah Campbell (Auburn, Mass.) hit her first
home run in the second, and Caroline Kurkowski (Niskayuna, N.Y.)
belted her fourth round-tripper of the spring in the fifth to
supply all the offense the Owls would need.
On Wednesday night, KSC suffered a 4-1 loss to Wesleyan
University in a make-up game originally scheduled for Tuesday.
Wesleyan jumped on the Owls for three unearned runs in the first
inning. KSC could muster just two hits, (singles by Kurkowski
and Foote), off Cardinals' starter Molly Gaebe. The Owls, who
left the bases loaded in the fourth, sixth, and seventh inning got
their lone run in the seventh when Adria Reynolds (Portsmouth,
N.H.) reached on an error with the bases loaded.
KSC starter Stephanie Carter (Cohoes, N.Y.) pitched well in the
loss. She gave up just one earned run and had nine strikeouts and
three walks.
Keene State wraps up its Spring Week trip with games against
Roger Williams University and Fontbonne University of St. Louis on
Friday.
