FORT MYERS, FLA. 3/19/04 - Friday was a good news,
bad-news day for the Keene State College softball team.
Playing the final two games of its Spring Week trip in Florida, KSC
defeated Roger Williams University 4-1, but were shutout 8-0
by Fontbonne University of St. Louis in its second game.
In the game against Fontbonne, catcher Emily Crompton had to
leave the game with a knee injury. The sophomore from
Concord, N.H., was attempting to block the plate during a squeeze
play.
The Owls, who played poorly in the field, were held to just
three hits in the game. Caroline Kurkowski (Niskayuna, N.Y.)
singled to extend her Spring Week hitting streak to 10 games.
Starting pitcher Stephanie Carter (Cohoes, N.Y.) took the
loss. Jennifer Smith (Salem, N.H.) also tossed a couple of
relief innings.
Earlier, Jennifer Norman (Penacook, N.H.) had three hits and two
RBIs, including her first home run of the season to lead Keene
State to a 4-1 win over Roger Williams University.
Norman's home run gave KSC a 1-0 lead in the first. The
Owls added two more runs in the second. Amanda Foote (Hudson,
N.H.) tripled and scored on Kathleen Gambino's (Freeport, N.Y.)
squeeze bunt. Gambino later scored on Adria Reynolds' fielders
choice out.
Freshman Erin Fouroli (Warwick, R.I.) gave up one earned run and
six hits in her five innings on the mound. She fanned three
and walked two to improve her record to 3-0 on the trip. Meghan
McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.) gave up a hit and struck out four
batters in her two inning of relief pitching.
Keene State, which completes its trip with a 7-3 record, is
scheduled to begin its northern schedule with a home doubleheader
against Springfield College next Thursday.
