Softball: Owls Split Pair Against Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. 3/27/04 -  The Keene State College softball team split a doubleheader against Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon in Providence.  Both games were decided in dramatic fashion as RIC took the first game, 2-1, in eight innings, and the Owls won in their last at-bat in the tiebreaker, 1-0.

In game one, KSC sophomore third baseman Sarah Campbell (Auburn, MA) led off the third inning with a single and came home on an RBI single by Adria Reynolds (Portsmouth, NH) to give KSC a 1-0 lead.  RIC sophomore left fielder Megan Ponte (Wakefield, RI) singled in the bottom of the eighth and then scored on junior Amy Machado's (Newport, RI) two-out single for the 2-1 win.

Junior pitcher Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, VT) gave up six hits while fanning eight and giving up two walks in a complete game performance.  It was McLoughlin's (2-1) first loss of the season.   RIC senior pitcher Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, RI) struck out 11 to earn her third win of the season.

The Owls played a scoreless game with the Anchorwomen in game two until the bottom of the seventh.  Senior Caroline Kurkowski (Niskayuna, NY) led off the seventh with a single and then was lifted for pinch runner McLoughlin.  After a sacrifice and a strikeout, sophomore Tiffany Underhill (Eastham, MA) singled and moved McLoughlin to third.  She then scored on an error to win the game.  Freshman pitcher Erin Fuoroli (Warwick, RI) (4-0) struck out five to earn her fourth victory of the year.

In upcoming action, KSC (8-4, 1-1 LEC) will face Western Connecticut State University in a doubleheader for its LEC home opener on Saturday (1 p.m.)
