PROVIDENCE, R.I. 3/27/04 - The Keene State College
softball team split a doubleheader against Rhode Island College on
Saturday afternoon in Providence. Both games were decided in
dramatic fashion as RIC took the first game, 2-1, in eight innings,
and the Owls won in their last at-bat in the tiebreaker, 1-0.
In game one, KSC sophomore third baseman Sarah Campbell (Auburn,
MA) led off the third inning with a single and came home on an RBI
single by Adria Reynolds (Portsmouth, NH) to give KSC a 1-0
lead. RIC sophomore left fielder Megan Ponte (Wakefield, RI)
singled in the bottom of the eighth and then scored on junior Amy
Machado's (Newport, RI) two-out single for the 2-1 win.
Junior pitcher Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, VT) gave up six
hits while fanning eight and giving up two walks in a complete game
performance. It was McLoughlin's (2-1) first loss of the
season. RIC senior pitcher Kim Warrington (North
Kingstown, RI) struck out 11 to earn her third win of the
season.
The Owls played a scoreless game with the Anchorwomen in game
two until the bottom of the seventh. Senior Caroline
Kurkowski (Niskayuna, NY) led off the seventh with a single and
then was lifted for pinch runner McLoughlin. After a
sacrifice and a strikeout, sophomore Tiffany Underhill (Eastham,
MA) singled and moved McLoughlin to third. She then scored on
an error to win the game. Freshman pitcher Erin Fuoroli
(Warwick, RI) (4-0) struck out five to earn her fourth victory of
the year.
In upcoming action, KSC (8-4, 1-1 LEC) will face Western
Connecticut State University in a doubleheader for its LEC home
opener on Saturday (1 p.m.)
