KEENE, N.H. 4/27/04 - Junior pitcher Jennifer Smith (Salem,
N.H.) tossed a complete game two-hitter in the second game enabling
the Keene State College Softball team to split a non-conference
doubleheader against Springfield College at Owl Athletic Complex on
Tuesday.
Springfield College erupted for eight runs in the top of the
seventh inning on the way to a 9-1 victory in the first game.
Smith fanned three and didn't give up a walk to improve her
record to 4-1.
The Owls scored single runs in the first three innings of the
second game. Kathleen Gambino (Freeport, N.Y.) scored on a
infield out in the first and Annie Devine's (So. Hadley Mass.)
infield hit scored Kari Gardner (Grafton, Mass.) who opened the
second with a double. Gambino hit her third home run of the
season in the third.
Pitcher Brittany Dielemans (Middlebury, Conn.) took the loss for
the Pride.
Jackie Agrillo (Acton, Mass.), Missy Edwards (Calverton, N.Y.),
and Amanda Johansson (Leominster, Mass.) cracked home runs for
Springfield in the seventh inning of the first game. Laurie
Cersosimo (West Hartford, Conn.) also had a two-run double for the
Pride in the inning.
Caroline Kurkowski (Niskayuna, N.Y.) who went three-for-four in
the opener, finished the doubleheader with five hits for KSC.
Stephanie Carter (Cohoes, N.Y.) (1-5) took the loss for the Owls
while Amy Brucker (Westerly, R.I.) picked up the win in the first
game.
Keene State (26-8) will be the host and top seed in the Little
East Tournament, which begins Thursday at Owl Athletic
Complex. Springfield goes to 20-15.
