KEENE, N.H. 4/30/04 - Adria Reynolds (Portmouth, N.H.) had a
home run and three RBIs and Meghan McLoughlin pitched a complete
game two-hitter to lead top seed Keene State College to a 7-1
victory over sixth seed Plymouth State University in game six of
the Little East Conference Softball Tournament played Friday in
Keene.
Facing elimination, KSC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first
inning on a two-run home run by Adria Reynolds (Portsmouth, N.H.).
It was her second of the season. The Owls added another run in the
third on Abby Collis' (Wynantskill, N.Y.) RBI double.
Keene State broke the game open with four runs in the fourth.
The Owls had four hits, including RBIs from Jenn Norman (Penacook,
N.H.) and Reynolds, and took advantage of three Panther errors and
a past ball to pull ahead.
PSU broke up the shutout with Michelle Dubois' RBI double in the
bottom of the seventh inning.
McLoughlin struck out five and walked one to improve to
12-2. Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) (10-10) took the loss for
the Panthers (15-16) who were eliminated form the tournament with
the loss.
Keene State (27-9) will face Eastern Conn. at 9 am on Saturday.
Game #4
KEENE, N.H. 4/30/04 - Meg Cirigliano (Newington, Conn.) had
three hits and came in on relief to shutdown a R.I. College rally
as third seed Western Connecticut hung on for a 6-4 win over the
second seeded Anchorwomen in game four of the Little East
Tournament played Friday in Keene.
The Colonials loaded the bases in the first inning. RIC
cut down a runner at home when centerfielder Sue Gaber (Colchester,
Conn.) threw Meg Cirigliano (Newington, Conn.) out at home.
Mallory Zenkus (Seymour, Conn.) followed with an RBI single. WCSU
added two more runs in the second on an RBI from Cathleen Knapp
(Monroe, Conn.) and an error.
RIC got two runs back in the fourth on an RBI double from Nicole
Riley (No. Providence, R.I.) and a run producing single from
Katelyn Labelle (So. Dartmouth, Mass.).
WCSU got those two runs back in the top of the fifth Christine
Valie (Waterbury, Conn.) had a RBI triple and Dez Lanphear
(Danbury, Conn.) had an RBI single to push its lead to 5-2.
The Anchorwomen closed the gap to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth
on run producing singles from Labelle and Cassie Lyons (Hudson,
Mass.). Cirigliano came into pitch to end the RIC rally with the
bases loaded.
The Colonials got a key insurance run in the top of the seven
when Jennifer Caveney's brought in a run with a bloop single.
Knapp also had three hits for WCSU. Labelle had two-hits
and two RBIs for RIC.
Kristy Swanson (Danbury, Conn.), who took over for starter
Brooke Morris (Stamford, Conn.) got the win to improve to 7-6.
Cirigliano notched the save.
WCSU (22-13) plays Southern Maine in game no. 7 at 3
p.m. RIC plays Eastern Conn. in game 5 at 11 a.m.
Game #5
KEENE, N.H. 4/30/04 - Lindsay Savelle (Cheshire, Conn.) pitched
a complete game one-hitter to lead fifth seed Eastern Connecticut
State University to a 5-0 shutout victory over second seed R.I.
College in the fifth game of the Little East Conference Tournament
played Friday in Keene.
Eastern Conn. plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Kelly Carino (Greenwich, Conn.) had a RBI double and Andrea Tarbox
(Enfield, Conn.) scored a run on a bunt single.
The Warriors added two more runs in the fifth. Kelly Rowan
(Watertown, Conn.) hit one back to the R.I. College pitcher who
mishandled the ball allowing
Shari D'Amico (Trumbull, Conn.) to score. The pitcher then threw
wild to home giving Annmarie Fillian (Canton, Conn.) a chance to
come around with the second run.
Karen Taber (Deep River, Conn.) capped the scoring for ECSU with
a solo home run, her second of the season, in the sixth.
Megan Ponte (Wakefield, R.I.) got the only hit for the
Anchorwomen, a single in the fourth inning.
Savelle fanned two and walked one to improve her record to
14-6. Nicole Riley (No. Providence, R.I.) (10-7) took the
loss for RIC.
Eastern Conn. plays Keene State at 9 am on Saturday.
Rhode island College (21-14-1) is eliminated from the tournament
with the loss.
Game #7
KEENE, N.H. 4/30/04 - Third seed Western Connecticut State
University scored two runs in the top of the seventh to win a
dramatic 3-2 Little East Conference Softball Tournament game
against fourth seed Southern Maine at Keene, N.H. on Friday.
Meg Cirigliano (Newington, Conn.) tied the game with a RBI
double down the right field line that scored pinch-hitter Dez
Lanphear (Danbury, Conn.) who had singled. Cirigliano came
around on an error by the USM leftfielder on a fly ball from Emily
Cullen (Bethel, Conn.).
Western Conn. took a 1-0 lead in the second on Jen
Caveney's (Keene, N.H.) RBI triple.
Southern Maine went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second on a
two-run home run by Caterina Rittano (Sangerville, Me.).
USM had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the
seventh, but left the bases loaded.
Kristy Swanson (Danbury, Conn.) got her second win of the day to
improve to 8-6. Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass.) took
the loss for the Huskies.
The Tournament will resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with Keene
State/Eastern Conn. playing the first game.
