Softball: KSC Sweeps Westfield State

KEENE, N.H. 4/8/04 -Pitchers Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.) and Erin Fouroli (Warwick, R.I.) each tossed complete game victories to lead the Keene State College softball team to a non-conference sweep over Westfield State College at Owl Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon.

It was the second sweep in as many days for KSC (12-4), which took a pair from Mass. College yesterday.  Westfield State (7-11) has lost its last four games.

McLoughlin gave up two hit and struck out nine batters in the opener.  She is now 3-1 on the season.

The Owls got all their runs in the third inning.  With two out, Kathleen Gambino (Freeport, N.Y.) tripled and scored on Jenn Norman's (Penacook, N.H.) smash off of the Westfield third baseman.  Adria Reynolds (Portsmouth, N.H.) then lined a shot over the left field fence, her first home run of the season, to give KSC a 3-1 lead.

Westfield got one run back in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI double from Amanda Fregeau (Athol, Mass.).  WSC later had runners on second and third with no outs, but McLoughlin struck out the side.

Beth Garfield (Brockton, Mass.), who struckout three, took the loss for WSC.

Fouroli, a freshman, scattered four hits, fanned seven and did not give up a walk, to improve her record to 5-0 in the second game.

KSC scored an unearned run in the fifth inning.  With runners on first and second, Reynolds came home to score on an error when the Westfield first baseman mishandled a throw from right field attempting to get Tiffany Underhill (Eastham, Mass.) out at first.

Westfield State threatened to tie the game in the seventh.  Liz Oliveira (Fall River, Mass.) opened the inning with a single.  The next batter, Casey Greggo (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) tried to sacrifice Oliveira to second base, but she was thrown out at first. KSC second baseman then threw across the diamond nailing Olivieria who tried to get to third on the play.  Fuoroli then struck out Emily Tangney (Randolph, Mass.) for the final out of the game.
