DANBURY, CONN. 1/11/05 - The Western Connecticut State
University women's basketball team could not hold on to a
five-point first half lead as Keene State College came from behind
to post the 58-47 victory at the Feldman Arena Tuesday night.
The Owls, 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the Little East Conference were
powered by a balanced scoring attack with four players scoring
double figures. Sarah Begnoche (Millville, MA) led the way for
Keene State with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Mary Crawford (Mount
Holly, VT) added 11 points while Bekka Hopkins (Oxford, MA) and
Brianne Barnes (Merrimack, NH) contributed 10 points each.
The score at halftime was tied 20-20.
The Owls returned from the break and took an 11-point lead
(41-30) at the 10:06 mark on a lay-up by Caitlin Jamiel (Cranston,
R.I.). The Colonials would cut the lead down to three (44-41) with
five minutes remaining on a jumper by Mallory Stevens (Seymour,
Conn.), but would get no closer.
Freshman guard Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, CT) led the
Colonials in scoring with 13 points on six of 10 shooting from the
floor. Gina Piroscafo (Naugatuck, CT) added 11 points for WestConn,
now 7-5 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Keene State returns to action on Saturday (1 p.m.) at Spaulding
Gym against Rhode Island College.
