PROVIDENCE, R.I. 2/19/05 - The Keene State College men's
basketball team concluded its regular season with a 79-70 overtime
loss to Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference game
played Saturday afternoon at RIC's Murray Center.
Already locked into the fourth position in the LEC standings ,
KSC (15-9, 8-6 LEC) will face fifth seed UMass-Dartmouth (12-13,
6-8 LEC) in a tournament opening round game at Spaulding Gym on
Tuesday night (7:30 p.m.). UMD earned the fifth seed with its 95-61
victory over Southern Maine. KSC swept its two games against the
Corsairs this season.
The Anchormen outscored the Owls 13-4 in the overtime period to
gain the victory. RIC hit eight of 14 free throws in the extra
session.
In regulation, freshman Matt Hickey's (Mahopac, N.Y.)
three-pointer gave KSC a 66-64 lead with 32 seconds to go. Kamari
William's baseline jumper knotted the game with 14 seconds
remaining. The Owls had an opportunity to win the game in
regulation play, but his three-pointer rimmed out.
Sean Sullivan (Athol, Mass.) led KSC with 17 points. Hickey
scored 12 points, and David Sontag, who fouled out with 2:49 to go
in the game, finished with 10 points. Ben Maynard had a team-high
10 rebounds.
Andre Daley and Williams scored 19 points each, and Kevin
Payette added 17 points for the RIC (17-7, 10-4 LEC). The
second-seeded Anchormen host Southern Maine in a LEC first round
game on Tuesday.
It was the first time RIC has swept both regular-season games
against KSC.
