PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshman Joy DePalo (Enfield, N.H.) scored a
career-high 18 points Tuesday evening to lead the Plymouth State
University women's basketball team to a 62-49 victory over
archrival Keene State College in a Little East Conference women's
basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.
The Panthers, who have alternated wins and losses the last nine
games, improve to 9-12 overall and 5-6 in conference play. The Owls
dropped their third in a row and fifth in the last six outings to
dip to 12-10 overall and 6-5 in the LEC. PSU and KSC split their
season series, as the Owls took an 80-58 decision last month in
Keene.
Plymouth State never trailed in the contest. It was a two-point
Panther lead midway through the first half when PSU pulled ahead
with a 16-5 run to take a 31-18 advantage with three minutes to
play in the half. Keene State closed the margin to eight points
(35-27) at the break.
The Panthers opened the second half with a 13-2 run to open up a
19-point lead (48-29). Keene State responded with three consecutive
three-pointers to get the deficit down to 10 points, but PSU
quickly got the lead back up to 18 points (58-40) with seven
minutes to play. The Owls got no closer than 13 points the rest of
the way.
DePalo made 6-of-11 from the field, including a season-best
5-of-9 from three-point range. PSU also got 10 points and a
team-high eight rebounds from senior Betsy Oswalt (Jaffrey, N.H.),
and nine points apiece from senior Lauren Devereaux (Hope Valley,
R.I.) and sophomore Colleen Mahoney (North Attleboro, Mass.).
Sophomore Ashley White (Merrimack, N.H.) also contributed eight
points and eight assists for the Panthers.
The Owls had only two players reach double figures in scoring,
as sophomore Sarah Begnoche (Millville, Mass.) and freshman
Danielle Graveley (Schenectady, N.Y.) each finished with 10 points.
Begnoche also collected a team-high seven rebounds. KSC's leading
scorer, sophomore Bri Barnes (Merrimack, N.H.) made only 1-of-7
shots and finished with five points.
