FT. MYERS, FLA. 3/15/05 - The Keene State College softball team
posted a 3-0 record against three different teams in a full day of
softball on Tuesday in Ft. Myers, Fla. After defeating Salem State
College 5-2 in the opener, the Owls went on to post eighth-inning
tie-breaking victories over Lasell College (4-3) and Norwich
University (5-2).
With the sweep, Keene State improves to 6-1 on the season.
Erin Fuoroli (Warwick, R.I.) got the nod in the first game
fanning six batters, allowing five hits, and walking but one in six
innings on the mound.
KSC got hits from Kaity Conklin (Selkik, N.Y.) who went
three-for-three with an RBI, and Amanda Foote (Hudson, N.H.) who
went two-for-four.
In the second game, the Owls held Lasell College scoreless until
the seventh inning when the Lasers' tied the game one-all. Using
the tie-breaker rule, LC was able to score two runs in the top of
the eighth to take a 3-1 lead. KSC put Amanda Foote (Hudson, N.H.)
on second to open the bottom of the eighth. She scored on a triple
by Sarah Campbell (Auburn, Mass.), who was also able to score the
tying run (3-3) on a throwing error by Lasell's second baseman.
With no outs, Conklin steps to the plate and bangs a triple. Lasell
intentionally walks Ashlee Nicholson (Swanzey, N.H.) and Fuoroli,
to bring up Julie McLaurin who has gone hitless during spring week.
McLaurin rockets a single up center field to score the game-winning
run.
Nicholson (2-0) struck out 12 batters to earn the win.
In the final game, senior Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.)
set a new Owl mark for strike outs in a game (15) to wrap up the
Owls' 3-0 day. She pitched the complete eight innings for the win,
allowing only three hits.
KSC held a 1-0 lead until Norwich scored in the sixth inning. In
the tie-breaker, Norwich made it a 2-1 game when their placed
runner advanced to third on a wild pitch, and later scored on a
sacrifice fly. The Owls answered, placing Kari Gardner (Grafton,
Mass.) on second, who advanced to third on a passed ball. Sarah
Campbell beats out a bunt to make it to first base leaving runners
on first and third. A single up the middle by Nicholson scores the
tying run (2-2). A two-run blast by freshman Melissa Scata (Medway,
Mass.) wins the game.
Keene State is off on Wednesday and will face Worcester State
College and Wesleyan University on Thursday.
