FORT MYERS, FLA. 3/18/05 - The Keene State College softball team
concluded its spring week trip in grand fashion with three
victories on Friday in Fort Myers, Fla. The Owls stared their day
by posting shutouts over Cazenovia (N.Y.) College (2-0) and Bowdoin
College (1-0) then hanged on for a 5-4 victory against Drew (N.J.)
University.
In the opener, Julie McLaurin's (Amherst, N.H.) two out RBI
double in the fourth inning scored Brittany Littlefield
(Saugerties, N.Y.) to give KSC a 1-0 lead. In the sixth, freshman
Melissa Scata (Medway, Mass.) hit her third home run of the spring
over the left field fense.
Erin Fuoroli (Warwick, R.I.) (2-0) gave up just two hits and
struck out four batters over six innings to notch the pitching win.
Ashlee Nicholson (Swanzey, N.H.) pitched the seventh inning to
pickup the save.
Megan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.) pitched a complete game one
hitter in the win over Bowdoin. McLoughlin, who tossed a perfect
game and no-hitter last year, had her no-hit bid stopped with two
out in the seventh inning. She fanned seven batters to improve her
record to 2-1.
Nicholson provided the Owls with all the offense they needed
when she belted her first college round-tripper in the fourth
inning. A blast over the right field fence.
In the nightcap, KSC went up 5-0 before holding on for the win
against Drew. KSC took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a RBI
double by Littlefield. After three straight walks, Sarah Campbell
(Auburn, Mass.) cleared the bases with a two out triple. Campbell
came home on a single by Kaity Conklin (Selkik, N.Y.).
Drew plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Littlefield got the win and Nicholson came in to get her second
save of the day.
KSC Coach Charlie Beach is pleased that his team will return to
Keene with a 9-1 record. "We're a very balanced team and getting
contributions from a lot of different players," he said. "I felt
this team had the potential and talent to have a good trip, and
they proved it out on the field. "Hopefully it will be a good omen
for the rest of the season."
