KEENE, N.H. 4/9/05 - The Rhode Island College softball team
spoiled Keene State home opener by sweeping the Owls 3-2 and 10-4
in a Little East Conference doubleheader played at Owl Athletic
Complex on Saturday. It was the first LEC games of the season for
both teams.
Pinch running for Jeanne Rossa (Milford, Conn.) who singled and
moved to second on a sacrifice, Andree Sitnik (Lincoln, R.I) came
around to score the winning run on an error in the top of the ninth
inning to give RIC the victory in the opener.
The Anchorwomen took a 2-0 lead in the game. Amy Mechado
(Newport, R.I.) doubled and scored in the second and Adora Burke
(Naples, Me.) had an RBI hit in the fourth.
KSC tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth on RBI
double from Tiffany Underhill (Eastham, Mass.) and RBI single from
Sarah Campbell.
Burke went three-for three and Rossa had a couple of hits for
RIC. Campbell had two hits for KSC.
Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.) (3-2) took the loss for
Keene State while Heidi Eichler (Madison, Conn.) in relief of
starter Nicole Riley (N. Providence, R.I.) got the win.
The Anchorwomen banged out 12 hits and Keene State made five
errors in the second game. RIC scored three runs in the first and
second innings to pull away for the Owls.
Jill DeLuca (West Warwick, R.I.) went four-for-four and Machado
had two hits and two RBIs to lead RIC's attack in the nightcap.
Freshman Melissa Scata (Medway, Mass.) had a lead-off home run
in the fourth and Liz Mroczka (Rocky Hill, Conn.) had an RBI double
in the sixth for the Owls.
Ashlee Nicholson (Swanzey, N.H.) (2-1) suffered her first loss
of the season while Eichler (6-4) notched her second win of the day
for RIC (9-9, 2-0 LEC).
Keene State (11-3, 0-2 LEC) saw its nine game winning streak
come to an end. The Owls play at Mass College on Thursday.
