Field Hockey Edged by Bridgewater State, 1-0

'Bridgewater, Mass. - Senior forward Dee Scanlan (South Yarmouth, Mass.) notched her first career collegiate goal with time winding down in regulation to give Bridgewater State College a dramatic 1-0 victory over Keene State College in Little East Conference field hockey action this afternoon in Bridgewater.

Scanlan tipped a shot by freshman Krystal Gonsalves (Gardner, Mass.) past the sprawling Keene State keeper, Sara Joyce (Hampstead, N.H.), with just 30 seconds remaining on the clock to give BSC its first win of the season.  The victory also snapped a 13-game losing streak that dates back to October 2nd of last season when BSC defeated UMass-Dartmouth, 1-0.  Bridgewater State is now 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the LEC standings.  Keene State drops to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Bridgewater State sophomore goalie Nicole Downs (Hanover, Mass.) recorded five saves on the day as she picked up her first collegiate victory and first collegiate shutout.  Her biggest save of the day came in the first half when she made a spectacular stop of a penalty stroke attempt to keep the game scoreless.

KSC junior keeper Joyce also played well in goal in the losing effort for the Owls as she made seven saves on the day.

Keene State will try to get back on the winning track on Saturday (1:30 p.m.) as they play host to the Rams of Framingham State College.
