'Bridgewater, Mass. - Senior forward Dee Scanlan (South
Yarmouth, Mass.) notched her first career collegiate goal with time
winding down in regulation to give Bridgewater State College a
dramatic 1-0 victory over Keene State College in Little East
Conference field hockey action this afternoon in Bridgewater.
Scanlan tipped a shot by freshman Krystal Gonsalves (Gardner,
Mass.) past the sprawling Keene State keeper, Sara Joyce
(Hampstead, N.H.), with just 30 seconds remaining on the clock to
give BSC its first win of the season. The victory also
snapped a 13-game losing streak that dates back to October 2nd of
last season when BSC defeated UMass-Dartmouth, 1-0.
Bridgewater State is now 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the LEC
standings. Keene State drops to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the
conference.
Bridgewater State sophomore goalie Nicole Downs (Hanover, Mass.)
recorded five saves on the day as she picked up her first
collegiate victory and first collegiate shutout. Her biggest
save of the day came in the first half when she made a spectacular
stop of a penalty stroke attempt to keep the game scoreless.
KSC junior keeper Joyce also played well in goal in the losing
effort for the Owls as she made seven saves on the day.
Keene State will try to get back on the winning track on
Saturday (1:30 p.m.) as they play host to the Rams of Framingham
State College.
