'KEENE, N.H. 10/5/06 - Dana Rye's (Virginia Beach, Va.) goal at
the 4:14 mark of overtime lifted eighth ranked Middlebury College
to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Keene State College in a
non-conference field hockey game played at Owl Athletic Complex on
Thursday.
Keene State (8-4) saw its four game winning streak come to an
end. Middlebury improves to 7-1.
The Panthers took a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by Sophie
Thompson at the 28:15 mark. Keene State tied the game two
minutes into the second half when freshman Karen Robinson (Barre,
Mass.) took a lead pass from Marrissa Boccaccio (West Hartford,
Conn.) and fired a shot past Middlebury goalie Caitlin Pentifallo
(River Edge, N.J.) for her fourth goal of the season.
The Panthers had several opportunities to score late in the
second half, but they were denied by Owl goalie Sara Joyce, who had
turned aside 18 shots, and backs Jess Mirisola (Tewksbury, Mass.)
and Amanda Rosenbeck (Wilder, Vt.) who both notched key defensive
saves.
Joyce made a flurry of saves in the early stages of overtime,
but couldn't stop a shot from Rye, who took a short cross from
Lacey Farrell (Greenwich, Conn.) and scored the game-winner.
Pentifallo had three saves and Meghan McGillen (East Harwich,
Mass.) stopped two shots in goal for the Panthers.
Keene State plays a LEC game at home against Bridgewater State
on Saturday (1:30 p.m.). Middlebury returns home to face
Amherst College on Saturday (12 p.m.).
