Softball: Owls Open Season With a Split

'FORT MYERS, FLA.  3/12/06 - The Keene State College softball team began its Spring Week trip by splitting a pair of games in Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday.  After being shutout 4-0 by Richard Stockton (N.J.) University, the Owls came back to defeat Drew (N.J.) 7-3 University.

Locked in pitchers' dual, KSC gave up all four runs in the seventh inning against Richard Stockton.  Ashlee Nicholson (Swanzey, N.H.)  gave up all four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.  The Owls could only muster two hits in the game, a couple of singles from Jessica Starkey (Keene, N.H.).

Melissa Scata (Medway, Mass.) had a home run and two RBIs and Erin Fuorolli (Warwick, R.I) picked up the pitching win in Keene State's win over Drew.

Trailing 2-0, KSC got one run back in the second when a runner scored from third on a pass ball.  They took the lead in the fourth (3-2) on a solo homerun to left by Scata and a RBI double from Fuorolli.

After Drew tied the score 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth, KSC went ahead for good in the sixth on a two-run double by Liz Mroczka (Rocky Hill, Conn.). They added two more runs in the seventh on Scata's sacrifice fly and RBI single from Julia May (Deep River, Conn.).

Freshman Jenna Patnode (Swanzey, N.H) also went two-for-three with a double for the Owls.

Fuorolli scattered eight hits while fanning three and walking six batters to pick up the win. Nicholson struck out four in the last two innings to notch the save.

Keene State plays Wheaton (Mass.) College and Albion (Mich.) College on Monday.
