'KEENE, N.H. 4/6/06 - The Keene State College softball team
swept a pair of five innings games against Westfield State at Owl
Athletic Complex in Keene, N.H., on Thursday. The KSC Owls banged
out 11 hits in a 12-1 opening game win. Erin Fuoroli
(Warwick, R.I.) tossed a no-hitter in and KSC collected 14 more
hits in a 13-0 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, KSC went a head 5-0 after two innings with Kaity
Conklin (Selkirk, N.Y.) providing RBI doubles in each inning. The
Owls broke the game open with a five-run third inning that featured
a three-run home run from Melissa Scata (Medway, Mass.)
It was Scata's fourth home run of the season. Jenna
Patnode (Swanzey, N.H.) had three hits and Sarah Campbell (Auburn,
Mass.) and Tiffany Underhill (Eastham, Mass.) had two hits each for
KSC.
WSC got its only run on a RBI double from Rose Dowling (North
Andover, Mass.) in the third.
Ashlee Nicholson (Swanzey, N.H.) got the complete game win for
the Owls. She scattered four hits, struck out six and didn't walk a
batter to improve to 5-3.
Katie Kissel (Monson, Mass.) (2-6) was the losing pitcher for
WSC.
Fuoroli fanned five and didn't walk a batter in her no-hit
performance. Jaclyn Bastarache (Turners Falls, Mass.) was
only runner to reach base on an error in the third.
Furoli said her no-hitter was a total team effort. "I was
in sync with my catchers all game and my change-up worked well,"
said Fuoroli. "It's hard for the teams to adjust following Ashlee
(Nicholson ) who throws harder."
The KSC Owls scored 10 runs on eight hits in the second
inning. Jessica Starkey (Keene, N.H.) had a two-run single
and Patnode, Nicholson, Julia May (Deep River, Conn.), and Kathleen
Gambino (Freeport, N.Y.) knocked in single runs in the inning.
Casey Riddell (Orange, Mass.) (2-6) took the loss for WSC.
Keene State is at Rhode island College on Saturday.
Westfield State travels to Fitchburg State on Saturday.
