KEENE, N.H. 1/11/2007 -Bri Barnes (Merrimack, N.H.) had 16 points including her 1,000th career point to lead the Keene State College women's basketball team to a 78-55 non-conference victory over Westfield State College at Spaulding Gym on Thursday night.
Barnes, who scored nine points in the first half, netted her 1,000th and 1,001st points of her career with a jumper from the top of the key at the 7:46 mark of the second half. "I was a little concerned I wasn't going to get it, but my teammates helped me out," said Barnes, who becomes the second 1,000-career point scorer for the Owls this season and the 16th overall women's player to reach the milestone. "It feels awesome to join a great group of players who have done it in the past.
"It's well deserved. Bri is a gym rat. She loves to play and it's a tribute to her hard work, "said KSC Coach Keith Boucher. "It's nice to have two 1,000 scorers who compliment each other so well."
Sarah Begnoche (Millville, Mass.), who finished with 13 points, scored her 1,00th career point earlier this season against the College of St. Joseph (Vt.).
The KSC Owls flew out to a 16-6 advantage on to way to building up a 41-25 halftime lead. The Owls, who shot 50% from the field (17-34), were also helped by 15 turnovers by Westfield. Michele Boudreau (Readsboro, Vt.) connected on three of her four three-point attempts.
Jenn Kinney had a team high seven rebounds for the KSC Owls (10-3).
Peggy Steuerwald (Lenox, Mass.) had a game high 17 points to lead Westfield State (5-7), Lauren Sylvain (Hadley, Mass.) had 11 points, and Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, mass.) pulled down eight rebounds.
Keene State plays the seventh ranked Huskies of Southern Maine in Gorham on Saturday (1 p.m.). Both teams come into the game undefeated (4-0) in LEC play.
