KEENE, N.H. 1/20/2007 - The Keene State College women's basketball team outscored Rhode Island College 9-0 in overtime to pull out a 59-50 Little East Conference win at Spaulding Gym on Saturday.
A lay-up by Sarah Begnoche (Millville, Mass.) gave KSC a 50-48 lead with 1:25 to play in regulation. Trailing throughout the game, the Anchorwomen tied the score on an inside basket by Kari Geisler (Deerfield, N.H.) with 16 seconds to play.
After a missed shot by Barnes, Caitlin Jamiel (Cranston, R.I.) was fouled going to the hoop with 0.5 seconds left on the clock. The senior forward missed both attempts from the line to send the game into overtime.
On KSC's first two possessions in OT, freshman Krisitin Degou (Oxford, Mass.) hit a lay-up and connected on a baseline jumper to give KSC a 54-50 lead. "When you go into overtime, someone has to step-up," said Degou. "I was fortunate to be open for an open lay-up and jumper. We worked hard all game and didn't want to give this one a way."
Jamiel and Bgneoche later hit lay-ups and the Owls' defense kept the Anchorwomen at bay to post the win.
Begnoche finished with her ninth double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds and Barnes scored 12 points to lead the Owls (11-5, 5-2 LEC) who snapped a two game LEC losing streak.
Geisler had 22 points and eight rebounds for RIC (10-7, 2-5 LEC). Josalee Danieli (New Gloucester, Me.) added eight points and eight rebounds and Brittany Rosen (Derry, N.H.) pulled down 12 rebounds.
The Owls, who scored the first 10 points of the game, took a 34-20 halftime lead on a buzzer-beating lay-up by Barnes.
The Anchorwomen started the second half with a 20-4 run to cut the Owls' lead to two points (40-38) on a lay-up by Geisler . Geisler had 10 points during RIC's run.
Both teams struggled from the field in the game. RIC shot 29% (20-68) while the Owls shot for 39 % (26-66).
Keene State and RIC hit the road for LEC games on Tuesday. KSC is at rival Plymouth State and R.I. College goes to UMass-Dartmouth. The games begin at 5:30 p.m.
