Owls Fall to Nichols 58-50

KEENE, N.H. 12/6/07 -  The Keene State College women's basketball team dropped a 58-50 non-conference game to Nichols College at Spaulding Gym on Thursday night.


It was the fourth straight loss for Keene State (2-4).  Nichols improves to 5-2. 


The Owls jumped out to a 9-2 lead. The Bison came back to take a 19-13 lead at the 4:48 mark on a basket by freshman guard Michele Guerin (Chicopee, Mass.).


Keene State sophomore guard Kristin Degou (Newburyport, Mass.) tied the game just before the half (21-all) on a driving lay-up.


Both teams struggled from the field in the first half. KSC hit nine of 28 shots (32%) while Nichols connected on 10 of 35 attempts (29%). KSC and NC were also one of eight in three point shots (12%). 


The Owls' poor shooting continued in the second while the Bison were able to hit several key three pointers.  Back-to back three-pointers by sophomore guard Lyndsey Bennett (North Brookfield, Mass.) and senior guard Kristina Weasel (Wakefield, R.I.) put Nichols up 42-33 with 9:09 to play.  Weasel hit another three-pointer with 3:53 to play to give the Bison a 49-42 advantage.


Sophomore guard Alyssa Sapp (Hartford, Vt.) led the Owls with 13 points.  Junior guard Michele Boudreau (Readsboro, Vt.) added 12 points and sophomore guard Nicole Simmler (Oxford, Mass.) finished with 11 points.  Junior forward Jenn Kinney (Salem, N.H.) had a game high 10 rebounds.  KSC shot just 27% form the field (17 for 63) and 2 for 17 from behind the arc.


Sophomore guard Curtia Humbert (Bridgeport, Conn.) topped the Bison with 14 points while junior guard MaryLynn Skarzenski (Hopelawn, N.J.) and Bennett finished with 12 points each. 


It was Nichols first win over the Owls in four meetings.


Keene State hosts R.I. College on Saturday (1 p.m.).
