SPRINGFIELD, MASS. 9/1/07 - The Keene State College women's
volleyball team posted a 2-1 mark at the Western New England
College Tournament on Saturday in Springfield, Mass.
After dropping their opening match to the host Golden Bears (1-3),
the Owls came back to defeat Westfield State (3-1) and Mitchell
College (3-0).
KSC fell to WNEC 27-30, 23-30, 30-23, 27-30. Junior middle
blocker Brittany O'Bryant (Merrimack, N.H.) led KSC with 17 kills.
Senior outside hitter Kelly Yankowski (Turners Falls, Mass.) added
15 kills, and Sarah Peterson (Danville, N.H.) finished with 21
digs.
Keene State lost its first game against Westfield 17-30, but came
back to win the next three games 30-19, 30-28, and
30-27. Freshman middle hitter Carly Newton (Barnstable,
Mass.) had 17 kills and Yankowski and O'Bryant finished with 15
kills each to lead the Owls' offense.
The Owls swept Mitchell College 30-7, 30-7, and 30-9.
Freshman setter Sarah Struble (East Hampton, N.Y.) had 21 assists
in the match.
Keene State finished second at the Tournament. Sophomore
setter Jordan Pokryfki (Wasila, AK) was nammed to the
All-Tournament team.
Keene State (3-1) returns to action on Tuesday at Southern New
Hampshire University as Head Coach Bob Weiner goes after his 300th
career victory.
