W. Volleyball: Owls Win Two in LEC Play

KEENE, N.H.  9/22/07 - The Keene State College women's volleyball team (10-6, 4-0 LEC) remained undefeated in Little East Conference play by winning a pair of matches at the Spaulding Gym on Saturday.


Keene State swept UMass-Boston 3-0 (30-16, 30-11, 30-26) and won a close four game match against defending LEC champ Eastern Conn. 3-1 (30-32, 30-16, 30-27, 30-26). After opening their season with 14 road matches, the Owls were playing at home for the first time this season.


In the deciding fourth game against the Warriors, KSC went up 28-22 when Carly Newton (Barnstable, Mass.) tipped the ball over the EC blocks. Eastern closed the gap to 29-26 on a slam by Alexandra Silvestros (North Bradford, Conn.).  Kelly Yankowki (Turners Falls, Mass.) won the match with a cross-court kill. 


Junior Brittany (Merrimack, N.H.) had a big day for the Owls with 12 kills and two blocks against UMB and 15 kills and four blocks vs. ECSU.  Yankowski finished with seven kills and three service aces vs. UMB and 15 kills and 17 digs against Eastern Conn. Other contributors vs. Eastern Conn. include Newton with 14 kills and two blocks, Sarah Peterson (Danville, N.H.) with 30 digs, and setter Jordan Pokryfki (Wasila. AK) with 43assists.


In the second match, Eastern Conn. defeated UMass-Boston 3-1 (30-24, 27-30, 30-23, 30-19).


For the Warriors, Sandra Jaques (Milford Conn.) had 12 kills and 21 digs vs. UMB and 14 kills vs. KSC.  Lauren O'Dell (Dover Plains, N.Y.) had 18 digs vs. UMB and 23 digs vs. KSC.  Ashley Tuggle (South Windsor, Conn.) finished with 17 kills vs. the Beacons. 


For UMB against KSC , Emily Thompson had 14 kills  and Megan MacAuley (Upland, Ca.) had eight kills. For UMB vs. ECSU:  Karly Sanchez (Lawrance, Mass.) and Natalie Crist (Santa Maria, Ca.) had 11 kills each.  Thompson had 13 digs and Alex Quinn (Brockton, Mass.) added 36 assists.
Keene State hosts Emmanuel College on Tuesday  (7 p.m.)
