KEENE, N.H. 10/1/08 - Freshman forward Aislynn
Sherry's (Rehoboth, Mass.) scored the only goal of the
game as Keene State shutout Westfield State 1-0 in a Little East
Conference field hockey game played Wednesday night at Owl Athletic
Complex.
Keene State (7-3, 3-0 LEC) remains undefeated in LEC play while
Westfield (4-3, 1-2 LEC) drops its second straight conference game
of the season.
Going toward the net, Sherry got her stick on a deep baseline
cross from junior forward Carly Benning (Brewster,
Mass.) and directed the ball into the net for the game-winner at
the 52:22 mark of the second half. "Carly brought it all the way up
the field and I was just waiting there and tipped it in past the
goalie," said Sherry, describing her game-winner and second goal of
the season. "It was nice to help the team when we really needed a
goal."
"We stepped it up when we needed to," said KSC Coach Amy
Watson. "We have some pretty good depth on our bench and
we just said we have to go 110-percent for short periods of time
and hope we can convert something and we did."
After scoring the goal, KSC kept the ball in the Westfield end
of the field not allowing the WSC Owls a chance for the
equalizer. Senior midfielder Vicky Winson (Upton, Mass.) got
off a shot during a corner in the final seconds of play, but the
band hit off the side of the net.
Keene State held an advantage in shots (14-8) and corners (7-3)
in the game.
KSC junior goalie Vikki Stoessel (Derry, N.H.)
turned aside three shots to pick up her third shutout of the
season. Freshman Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, Mass.) finished
the game with three saves for Westfield.
Both teams play LEC games on Saturday, Keene State is at Western
Conn. (12 p.m.) and Westfield travels to Southern Maine (2 p.m.).
KSC has won all 13 games against WSC in LEC play.
