NORTH DARTMOUTH, MASS. 9/20/08 - The Keene State men's
cross country team captured the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational on
Saturday. The Owls finished sixth in the women's race.
The KSC men, ranked fourth in New England and 21st in Division
III, won the race with 85 points. Coast Guard was second (115
points) in the 38-team field.
Sophomore Jeff Trethewey (Merrimack, N.H.) and
senior Sean Gavaghan (Monroe, Conn) finished
fourth and fifth respectively in the identical time of 25:14 to
lead the Owls over the five mile course.
Sophomore Brandon Schillemat (Nelson, N.H.)
(16th/25:31), sophomore Timothy Pipp (New Ipswich,
N.H.) (23rd, 25:34), and junior Patrick Davis
(Wethersfield, Conn.) (37th/25:51) round-out the list of top
scorers for KSC.
Expected to be one of the top runners for the Owls, sophomore
Craig McPherson (Derry, N.H.) had to drop out of
the race after being kicked in the knee a half mile into the race.
Teddy Vrountas of Northeastern won the race with a time of
25:04.
Freshman Natalie Ferro (Dennis Mass.) was the
first Owl to the finish line, she placed 31st (19:15) on the 3.1
mile course. Sophomore Amy Knoblock
(Plymouth, Mass.) finished 35th (19:24). Junior Rita
Marcotte (Heath, Mass.) placed 43rd (19:28), freshman
Heather Pierce (Buckland, Mass.) finished in 44th
place (19:28), and freshman Andrea Walsh (Bolton,
Conn.) placed 45th (19:30).
The Owls tallied 196 points in the 41-team field. MIT won
the women's championship with 67 points. Running for Addidas,
Melissa Donais won the women's race with a time of 18:03.
KSC freshman Paige Mills (Keene, N.H.) won the
women's sub-varsity race with a time of 18:57.
Keene State will be at the Williams College Invitational next
Saturday.
