HARTFORD, CONN. 9/6/08 - Keene State men's and women's cross
country teams began their season with third place finishes at the
Trinity College Invitational held in Hartford, Conn. on Saturday.
The Owl men, ranked 20th in the national preseason
pool, were led by sophomore Jeff Trethewey
(Merrimack, N.H.) who finished third on the 5K course with a time
of 16:33.
Junior Sean Gavaghan (Monroe, Conn.) also place
in the top-10 with a seventh place finish (16:47). Sophomore
Brandon Schillemat (Nelson, N.H) (16th, 16:56),
junior Patrick Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) (19th,
17:04) and sophomore Corey Loonen (Sandwich,
Mass.) round out the top scorers for the Owls, who were missing
front-runners Craig MacPherson (Derry, N.H.) and
Jared Samuel (Londonderry, N.H.), who were nursing
injuries.
KSC finished with 67 points in the 11-team field.
UMass-Lowell edged Trinity 51-50 to win the team title. The
Bantam's Michael Burnstein won the race with a time of 16:21.
Junior Rita Marcotte (Heath, Mass.) finished
ninth (17:27) of the 4K course to lead the Owl women.
Freshman Andrea Walsh (Bolton, Conn.) was right
behind in 10th place with a time of 17:32.
Sophomore Amy Knobloch (Plymouth, Mass.),
(23rd, 17:57), freshman Sarah Titus (Derry, N.H.)
25th, 17:59), and sophomore Cara Boscarino (East
Hampton, Conn.) were among the top-five finishes for the Owls.
Expected to be a top runner for KSC this season, sophomore
Nicole Slane (Milford, N.H.) had to pull out of
the race with an injury.
KSC tallied 96 points in the 14 team women's field. Tufts,
led by first place finisher Stephanie McNamara (16:31) captured the
women's championship with 48 points.
The Owls will take next week off before competing Sept. 20 at
the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational.
