Owls Drop Pair in Florida

CLERMONT, FLA. 3/18/09 - The Keene State College softball team dropped a pair of one run games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida on Wednesday.

The Owls, 3-3 on their spring week trip, fell to Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham 5-3 in an eight-inning game and later in the day came up short 2-1 against Babson College.

"We're making young-player errors and can't overcome them right now," said KSC Coach Charlie Beach

Falling behind 1-0 to FDU-Florham, the Owls scored two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-out, bases loaded double by sophomore Ashley Annis (Gilford, N.H.).  The Devils regain the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

KSC tied the game (5-5) in the sixth on a RBI double by freshman Courtney Savoie (Stratham, N.H.).

After KSC was unable to score in the top of the eighth after putting a running on second under the tie-breaking rules, FDU-Florham won it with a walk-off two-run home run by Megan Golembiewski.

Freshman Elizabeth McNamara (Londonderry, N.H.) and Savoie had two hits each for the Owls.

Freshman Ashley Clark (Brentwood, N.H.) got the stat for KSC and pitched into the fifth inning, giving up three runs on nine hits, fanning six and issuing one walk.  Savoie pitched the rest of the way and took the loss.

Keene State had numerous opportunities to score, but couldn't come through with the big hit against Babson.

KSC took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on senior Katie Allenson's (Clifton Park, N.Y.) solo shot to left field, her second home run of the trip.

The Beavers tied the game in the fifth and scored the game-winning run in the sixth.

The Owls had runners on base in almost every inning, including the seventh when they left freshman Haley Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.) stranded at third.

Senior Jenna Patnode (Surry, N.H.) had a pair of doubles while freshmen Samantha Pratt (West Hartford, Conn.) and Chandler had two hits each.

Freshman Emily Albin (Bethel, Conn.) went the distance, allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Keene State has Thursday off. The Owls play Messiah College and Elmhurst College on Friday.
