Owls take two from Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 23, 2009) - Keene State College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader against Fitchburg State on Thursday. The Owls won game one 11-2 in six innings, and 10-0 in the five inning nightcap.

Keene State (16-11-1) has won eight of its last nine games.  Fitchburg falls to 4-26.

Keene State 11, Fitchburg State 2 (6 Innings)

Freshman Haley Chandler (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) led the Keene State attack in game one, going 4-for-4 with a double, homerun, two runs scored and four RBI. Senior Jenna Patnode (Surry, N.H./Monadnock Regional) collected two hits for the Owls, including a homerun, two runs scored and two RBI, while classmate Katie Allenson (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenedahoa) added a two run blast.

Sophomore Kristen Love (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) led the Fitchburg State game one offense, hitting 1-for-3 with a base-hit and one RBI, while senior Eryne Cotter (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) finished 2-for-3 with two singles and one RBI. Freshman Ashley McKinnon (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) added a base-hit for the Falcons.

Fitchburg State got on the board first with an RBI single by Cotter early in the first inning, but Keene State responded with 11 unanswered runs over the next five innings to secure the game one victory. The Owls used a six run, fifth inning to break open the game, capped a three RBI double by Chandler. In the sixth, Keene State continued to pump the offense as Allenson and Chandler connected for back-to-back long balls to give the Owls a ten run cushion.

Freshman Emily Albin (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) earned the victory for the Owls (3-3), tossing a complete game, five-hitter, yielding two runs while striking out four.  Freshman Allison Cousins (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) hurled the complete game for the Falcons (2-13), allowing nine earned runs over six innings, while striking out two.

Keene State 10, Fitchburg State 0 (5 Innings)

           

            The trio of Chandler, Patnode and Allenson struck again in game two for the Owls as the three combined for six hits, including two homeruns, five runs scored and four RBI. Chandler led the offense with a 2-for-3 game, including her second homerun of the day, while Patnode hit 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBI. Allenson added her second homerun of the day to lift the Owls.

Keene State used a consistent attack in game two, posting runs in every inning as the Owls clinched their 16th victory of the season. Keene used a three-run, second inning to take an early 4-0 lead and added six more runs over the final three innings, using the long-ball to its advantage. Patnode paced the Owls three run second inning with an RBI double, while Allenson and Chandler connected again for back to back round trippers in the third frame.

Junior Leigh Trzcinski (Worcester, Mass./South) notched two hits to lead the Fitchburg State offense in game two, while sophomore Lauren Donell (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) added a base-hit.

Sophomore Bethany Stone (Wells, Maine/Wells) suffered the loss for the Falcons (2-13), yielding seven earned runs and 12 hits over five innings of work. Freshman Samantha Pratt (Bristol, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) earned the win for the Owls (4-2), tossing a complete game three hitter with five strikeouts.

           Keene State will host UMass-Boston on Friday in  a make-up twinbill starting at 4 p.m. Fitchburg State will host its final regular season home contests on Saturday as it hosts Framingham State at 2 p.m.
