Box Score KEENE, N.H. 1/9/10 - After playing its last seven games on the
road, Keene State's return to Spaulding Gym didn't prove to be
pleasant homecoming for the Owls, who lost a 80-75 overtime game to
Rhode Island College in Little East Conference men's basketball
action on Saturday.
The loss drops the Owls to 7-6 and 1-2 in the LEC. Rhode
Island College (8-4, 3-0 LEC) remains undefeated in league play.
The Owls, who connected on seven of its 15 shots from behind the
arc, used the three-ball to grab a 39-35 halftime lead. Three
consecutive three-pointers, the last coming from sophomore forward
Derek D'Amours (Agawam, Mass.) gave KSC a 27-19 lead at the 8:50
mark.
After freshman Anthony Mariano's (Naugatuck, Conn.) third
three-pointer of the half made it a 39-31 game. Senior
guard Jake Grimes (Providence, R.I,), who made five of his seven
shots from the field, hit consecutive lay-ups in the closing stages
of the half to close the gap to four points at the break.
Trailing by as many as nine points (55-46) in the second half,
KSC battled back to send the game into overtime.
Freshman Derek Libbey (Lincoln, Me.) hit a fall away
three-pointer with 56 seconds to go in regulation to put RIC up
69-65.
A base-line jumper by freshman Drew Rolfe (Berlin, Mass.) with
28 seconds to go made it 69-67.
Sophomore Cody Snow (Leyden, Mass.) ht an arcing jumper from the
left baseline with 1.1 second on the clock to send the game into
the extra session.
The Anchormen outscored Keene State 11-6 in overtime.
After a pair of free throws by D'Amours, sophomore Mason
Choice's (Newport, R.I.) lay-up put RIC up 78-75 with 32 seconds to
play. Senior Jake Grimes (Providence, R.I.) blocked a
lay-up attempt by KSC freshman Nicco DeMasco (Swanzey, N.H.) and
junior guard Nick Manson (Newport, R.I.) hit a couple of foul shots
to account for the final score.
D'Amour's finished with a game-high 26 points to lead the
Owls. Snow, who was seven of 11 from the field, scored 16
points and Mariano added 15 points. DeMasco had a game high
12 rebounds to go with his nine points.
Choice had 24 points and Grimes finished with 23 points leading
RIC.
Both teams struggled at the line. RIC went 17-30 (57%) while KSC
was nine of 17 (53%).
The Owls and Anchormen continue LEC play on Tuesday. KSC
hosts Western Conn and RIC goes to Southern Maine.
