CLERMONT, FLORIDA 3/14/10 –
The Keene State College softball team began its 12-game spring week
schedule in Clermont, Florida with mixed results on
Sunday.
The Owls defeated
Wartburg (IA) College 4-3 in their first game before dropping a 7-3
contest to Frostburg (Md.) State later in the day.
Junior
Katie Bradford (Lebanon, N.H.) was the hitting
star for the Owls in their first-game victory. She had a RBI
double in the first inning that put KSC 1-0 and a sacrifice fly in
the third that tied the score at 2-all.
Sophomore Haley
Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.) drove in a run in the fourth,
giving KSC a 3-2 lead. In the fifth, Bradford tripled to
right center and came home on freshman Jessica
Fiorenza's (Wakefield, Mass.) RBI single to make it
4-2.
Bradford finished the game with two
hits and two RBIs. Sophomore Laura Chandler
(Wakefield, Mass.) also had two hits in the game.
Sophomore Courtney
Savoie (Stratham, N.H.) pitched into the fifth inning to
pick up the win. She gave up three runs on six hits with a
couple of walks. Sophomore Samantha Pratt
(Bristol, Conn.,) came in to get the save. She allowed just one hit
while fanning three in her 2 1/3 innings of work in the
circle.
Keene State did all its
scoring against Frostburg in the first inning. Freshman
Nicole Dupuis (Fitchburg, Mass.) made her first
college hit memorable with a bases-clearing three-run double that
gave KSC a 3-0 lead.
Frostburg took
advantage of walks and shaky play in the field to score four
unearned runs in the second and three more times in the
fifth.
“We
stumbled a little bit in the first game, but found a way to get the
win,” said KSC Coach Charlie Beach. “In the
second game, we had some confusion in the field and they had some
timely hits. One of the reasons we're down here is to
correct those mistakes.”
Makin her first
start for the Owls, sophomore pitcher Sara
Stocklinski (Newton, N.J.) took the loss. She gave up six
runs on four hits while walking five and striking out six
batters.
Keene State (1-1) plays Franciscan
University of Ohio and Concordia (Wis.) University on
Monday.
