PROVIDENCE, R.I. 4/10/10 – The Keene State softball team
split a Little East doubleheader against four-time conference
champs Rhode Island College in Providence on Saturday.
The Owls (11-9, 3-1 LEC) won the first game 5-2. The
Anchorwomen (16-5, 2-2 LEC) came back to take the nightcap 5-4.
Keene State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opener. Ahead
1-0 in the first, the Owls added two more runs in the second on RBI
hits by freshman Kayla Joyce (Bridgewater, Mass.)
and junior Katie Bradford (Lebanon, N.H.).
Bradford, who finished the game with three hits, added an RBI
single in the fourth to make it 4-0.
RIC scored its two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
KSC, which had eight hits in the game, scored one more run in the
top of the seventh on a ground out by senior Stephanie
Lavado (Wallingford, Conn.).
Sophomore Courtney Savoie (Stratham, N.H.), the
Owls' starter, improved her record to 4-2 with the win.
She pitched into the fifth inning, giving up two runs on five hits
with five strikeouts and one walk. Kyla Puccini took the loss
for RIC.
RIC junior shortstop Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI) went
3-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and a double to lead RIC to a
win in the nightcap.
In the second game, KSC took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first
on back-to-back RBI singles from Bradford and freshman Nicole
Dupuis (Fitchburg, Mass.).
After RIC tied the game with single runs in the first and third,
KSC went up 3-2 in the fourth on a home run by Bradford, her second
of the season.
The Anchormen tied the game in the bottom of the inning and
scored two runs in the fifth to go up 5-3. KSC made it a one
run game in the sixth when Lavado singled and came around to score
on a single to center by sophomore Haley Botti (Dracut,
Mass.).
Sophomore Laura Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.) had three of
KSC's 13 hits in the game. Twin sister Haley Chandler
(Wakefield, Mass.) chipped in with two hits along with Bradford,
Lavado, and junior Heather Harold (Newtown, N.J.).
Sophomore Emily Albin (Bethel, Conn.) started
for the Owls and gave up four runs and seven hits with six
strikeouts and one walk in her four innings in the circle.
Sophomore Ashley Clark (Alton, N.H.) came in to
pitch in the fifth and took the loss. She is now 1-3 on the season.
Keene State hosts Williams on Wednesday.
