KEENE, N.H. 4/24/10 – The Keene State softball team
used the long-ball, hitting five home runs, including three by
sophomore Haley Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.) in a
7-1 and 10-0 sweep of UMass-Dartmouth in a Little East Conference
doubleheader in Keene on Saturday. The second game ended after five
innings due to the eight-run rule.
The Owls (19-10-1, 6-2 LEC) took a 2-0 lead in the opener on
solo home runs by twin-sisters Laura and
Haley Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.) in the first and
third innings.
UMass-Dartmouth (7-18, 0-10 LEC) scored its only run in the
fourth on a home run by junior Michelle Conway (Burrillville,
R.I.).
The Owls scored five runs on five hits to go up 7-1 in the
bottom of the inning. Freshman Jessica Fiorenza
(Wakefield, Mass.) had a two-run single and Haley
Chandler hit her second home run of the game, a three-run
shot to left field.
Sophomore Courtney Savoie (Stratham, N.H.)
pitched the first three four inning to notch her team-leading
eighth (8-2) win of the season. She gave up one run on one hit
while fanning six.
Sophomore Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, Mass.) took the loss for
the Corsairs.
Keene State didn't waste any time getting on the board in
the second game, scoring three runs in the first on a three-run
home run by freshman Nicole Dupuis (Fitchburg,
Mass.).
The Owls added two more runs in the third with Laura Chandler
delivering an RBI double.
A five-run fourth inning was highlighted by a RBI single from
Fiorenza and Haley Chandler's third home run of the
doubleheader, a two-run blast, giving her four for the season.
KSC sophomore pitcher Emily Albin (Bethel,
Conn.) allowed her only hit of the game, a one-out double to left
center by sophomore Hannah Rounds (Lincoln, R.I.) in the top of the
fifth inning. Albin, now 5-1 in the circle, struck-out seven and
issued just one walk.
Eldridge also took the loss for UMD in the second game.
Sophomore Haley Botti (Dracut, Mass.,) Dupuis each had two hits
for KSC in the second game.
The Owls lead-off hitter in both ends of the doubleheader, Haley
Chandler went a combined six-for-seven in the twin-bill, with three
home runs, six RBIs, and five runs scored.
Keene State has an early wake-up call on Sunday, hosting LEC
front-runner Eastern Conn. in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at
10 a.m. UMass-Dartmouth is at Eastern Conn. on Monday.
