Box Score BOSTON, Mass. 10/27/11 – The Keene State College women's volleyball team dropped their final regular season Little East Conference match to host UMass Boston 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-18) on Thursday night at the Clark Athletic Center. In the process, senior middle blocker Ellyse Davis (Londonderry, N.H.) broke the school record for total blocks with 423 in her career.
With the loss the Owls drop to 16-11 and 5-2 in LEC play, while the Beacons improve to 23-4 and 6-1 in league action.
KSC's 5-2 record in conference contests will place them as the third seed in the upcoming Little East Conference tournament behind top-seeded Plymouth State and second seeded UMass Boston. The Owls opponent is yet to be determined as they will face the number six seed in a quarterfinal matchup at Owl Athletic Complex on Tuesday November 1st, at Spaulding Gymnasium.
In the third set, Davis' solo bock to make the game 4-4 on an attack attempt by Beacon sophomore outside hitter Brooke Nemethy (Oviedo, Florida) was sent back, giving the senior her 423 career block passing Brittany O'Bryant '08 and her old mark of 422. Davis also led the way with a team-high nine kills.
Senior outside-hitters Bridget O'Bryant (Merrimack, N.H.) and Kristen Girard (Red Hook, N.Y.) each had six kills apiece.
Quarter-backing the Owls attack, senior Laurie Whalen (Niantic, Conn.) had 22 assists and 10 digs for the Owls.
Defensively, O'Bryant led the way with 14 digs and freshman libero Sammy Dormio (Leesburg, Virginia) had 11 digs in the losing effort.
For UMass-Boston, junior middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, California) led all players with 14 kills and pitched in with a team-high 13 digs. Nemethy, senior Casey Hanneman (Denver, Colorado) and junior Kayla Wilson (San Jose, California) each had 11 digs, while Hanneman led the way with 35 assists in the victory.
Keene State heads to Conn. College this weekend, as they will wrap up their regular season with matches against Stevens Tech on Friday night and Tufts University on Saturday morning.
