Box Score FRAMINGHAM, Mass. 10/29/11 – The Keene State College field hockey team took care of business Saturday morning, defeating Little East Conference rival Framingham State 3-0 to run the table in conference play, and hand 22nd year head coach Amy Watson her 300th career victory.
"It's a great milestone to hit," said Watson. "This is a great team, with some great girls, so to do it with them makes it even more special. But I have to go back and thank all of my assistants and players for all they have done."
Watson improves her career record to 300-144-11 overall for a .659 winning percentage and an impressive 118-17 in conference play for a .875 winning clip.
With the victory KSC finishes the regular season 16-4 overall, and 11-0 in league play. The last time the Owls finished their LEC play undefeated was the 2006 squad that also finished with a clean slate in conference tilts, but now the team is focused on the tournament. "It is really nice to come out undefeated in conference," said Watson. "But now we have the bull's eye on our backs and people are going to want to knock us off. It's like the season starts over again next week and we have to go out there and take care of business."
With the loss Framingham State ends their season at 4-14 overall and 1-10 in conference play.
The Owls scored the game winner in the 9th minute of play as senior forward Elizabeth Coffin (Sugar Hill, NH) collected a rebound in the circle and fired a shot in the back of the cage for the 1-0 lead.
Keene State extended their lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute when senior midfielder Aislynn Sherry (Rehoboth, Mass.) fired a shot at the net that junior forward Kalin Billert (Center Conway, NH) redirected into the back of cage.
KSC would add another, as senior defender Kerry Howe (Atlantic Highlands, NJ) scored off a Coffin feed in the 69th minute to reach the final margin of 3-0.
The Owls outshot the Rams 27-4 in the game and held a 15-4 edge in penalty corners. Sarah Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) made 16 saves for the Rams, while Caitlin Davino-Draper (Hanover, Mass.) made two stops en route to the shutout victory for the Owls.
Keene State heads into next week's Little East Conference tournament as the top seed, and will face either the University of Southern Maine or Western Conn. State on Tuesday night at Owl Athletic Complex. The Huskies and Warriors will play tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. due to the storm that is blanketing much of the northeast, and the Owls will face the loser of that game.
