WALTHAM, Mass. 12/10/11 – The men's and women's Keene State College track and field teams had a strong showing that the Reggie Poyau Invitational at Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon. The women finished in fourth place with 71 points, while the men placed fifth with 59 points on the day.
Leading the way for the women, junior Maggie Fitter (Branford, Conn.) had two-of-KSC's four victories on the day, while senior Paige Mills (Keene, NH) and sophomore Sarah DiTonno (Wakefield, Mass.) had the others.
Fitter, who won the 800 meter and mile races, finished with times of 2:24.02 and 5:12.66, respectively, to earn the pair of victories.
Mills, who competed in just one race, beat the rest of the field in the 5,000 meters in a time of 17:31.36.
DiTonno, had a personal-best of over four feet in the 20-lb weight throw, with a toss of 40'-7.5'' (12.38 meters) to win the event. Junior Whitney Cyr (Milford, Mass.) and senior Keeley Moffitt (Guilford, Conn.) came in second and third in the event for KSC to sweep the top three spots.
Also placing well for the Owls, freshman Melanie Escalante (New Canaan, Conn.) finished the 400 meter race in a time of 1:02.12 for a fourth place finish.
The KSC men won two events on their way to a fifth place finish. Senior Kevin Hoyt (Newtown, Conn.) won the 5,000 meter race in a time of 15:21.87.
Freshman jumper Michael Pianka (Springfield, Vermont) had the other victory in the triple jump, with a leap of 42'-2'' (12.85 meters). Pianka also took second in the high jump with a jump of 6'-6'', while sophomore Evan Miller (Granville, N.Y.) took third with a leap of 6'-2''.
In the throwing events, freshman Ben Keach (Newfields, N.H.) took second place in the shot-put with a toss of 43'-10.75'' (13.38 meters).
On the track the team of Doug Dombrowik (Fitzwilliam, N.H.), Chris Plankey (Bristol, N.H.), Sarbjit Singh (Lebanon, N.H.) and Pianka finished the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:36.23 for a fourth place finish.
The Owls will return to the track in 2012, appearing at the Dartmouth Relays on January 8th at Dartmouth College.
