CLERMONT, FLA. 3/14/11 – The Keene State College softball team continued its winning ways on Monday, posting shutout victories over SUNY-Geneseo (9-0) and SUNY-Plattsburgh (2-0) at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida.
Timely hitting and solid pitching was the winning formula for the Owls, who improve to 4-0 on their spring week trip and the season.
Keene State finished with 10 hits and junior Courtney Savoie (Stratham, N.H.) tossed a complete game two-hitter in their six-inning win over Geneseo (1-2).
The Owls took a 2-0 lead in the second on RBI singles from freshman Molly Dussault (Weare, N.H.) and junior Haley Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.).
Going up 3-0 on a delayed steal in the fifth, Keene State ended the game with a six run sixth inning. Back-to-back doubles by junior Maura Bergan (Manchester, Conn.) and Dussault made it 4-0. Following RBI singles by sophomores Kayla Joyce (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Jess Fiorenza (Wakefield, Mass.), junior Laura Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.) belted a three-run home run over the left field fence.
Nicole Dupuis (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Dussault each had a couple of hits in the game.
Picking up her first win of the season, Savoie fanned eight and walked two in six innings of work.
Keene State scored both of its runs in the fourth inning against Plattsburgh (5-1), which came into the game undefeated.
Fiorenza led off the inning with a triple and came home on a double to left field by junior Katie Bradford (Lebanon, N.H.). After a single down the left field line by Dupuis, junior Sara Stocklinski (Newton, N.J.) helped her own cause with a single through the right side that plated Bradford.
Stocklinski, now 2-0 in the young season, pitched five innings, giving up three hits while striking out three and issuing two walks. Junior Samantha Pratt (West Hartford, Conn.) didn't allow a hit in the final two innings to pick-up the save. She struck out two and had one walk.
Keene State faces nationally ranked Washington (Mo.) St. Louis (11:30 a.m.) as well as RPI (1:30 p.m.) on Tuesday.
