Box Score 2 CLERMONT, FLA. 3/17/11 – The Keene State College softball team won two different types of games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida on Thursday. The Owls banged out 23 hits in a 15-0 five-inning romp over Franciscan (OH.) University and later in the day scored the game winning run with a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh on the way to a 7-6 victory over Wisconsin-Lutheran.
Keene State scored runs in all but one inning in its win against Franciscan (1-4). Sophomore Jess Fiorenza (Wakefield, Mass.) had a two-run single and sophomore Nicole Dupuis (Fitchburg, Mass.) and freshman Ellissa Coburn (Claremont, N.H.) added RBI hits in a six-run second inning that put the Owls up 9-0.
Fiorenza was five-for-five at the plate while juniors Samantha Pratt (Bristol, Conn.), sophomore Kayla Joyce (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Coburn each had three hits.
Junior Emily Albin (Bethel, Conn.). picked-up the win in the circle, improving her record to 3-1. She gave up five hits while fanning 10 and not issuing a walk.
It wasn't all rosy for the Owls in the game, junior Laura Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.) injured herself diving for a ball.
Keene State came back from a 6-2 deficit to defeat Wisconsin-Lutheran (1-4). The Owls scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to knot the score at 6-all. With the bases loaded, Joyce had a RBI single, junior Haley Chandler (Wakefield, Mass.) reached on an error that plated two runs and Fiorenza tied the score with a hit down the left field line.
The Owls escaped a potential scoring situation by the Warriors in the top of seventh. After allowing a lead-off single Sara Stocklinski (Newtown, N.J.) was able to get out of the jam when she caught a line drive by the next batter and doubled off the runner at first.
Dupuis open the bottom of the seventh with a walk, moved to second on a base hit bunt by Stocklinski and score the game-winning run on a double to left field by freshman Molly Dussault (Weare, N.H.).
Fiorenza went two for four in the game, giving her seven hits on the day. Freshman Julia Gray (Windham, N.H.) also had a couple of hits.
Junior Courtney Savoie (Stratham, N.H.) tossed the first four inning for the Owls, giving up five runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. She also hit two batters. Stocklinksi pitched the last three innings and got the win (4-0). She gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Keene State, 7-2 on its trip, plays Hamline University of Minn. (12 p.m.) and Knox College of Illinois (3:30 p.m.) on Friday.
