CLERMONT, FLA. 3/19/11 – The Keene State College softball team dropped the final game of its spring week trip, falling to nationally ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater 8-4 at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. on Saturday.
Keene State, which concludes its trip with an 8-4 record at the Dot Richardson Tournament, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a RBI triple by sophomore Kayla Joyce (Bridgewater, Mass.) that hit the top of the left field fence and a pop-up RBI single by junior Maura Bergan (Manchester, Conn.) that landed behind the pitching circle.
The Warhawks, ranked 18th in the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association pre-season poll, scored seven runs in the fourth inning to go up 8-2.
Sophomore Jessica Fiorenza (Wakefield, Mass.) had a two-run double for the Owls in the fifth inning.
Freshman Ellissa Coburn (Claremont, N.H.) had two of KSC's seven hits in the game.
Junior Courtney Savoie (Stratham, N.H.), now 1-2, pitched the first three and a third innings for the Owls and took the loss. She gave up all eight runs on nine hits with a strikeout. Junior Samantha Pratt (Bristol, Conn.) took over in the third and was perfect the rest of the way, not allowing a run or hit in her two and two-thirds innings in the circle.
Keene State is scheduled to begin its north schedule at Springfield College on Tues, March 29.
