SPRINGFIELD, MASS. 4/23/11 – The Keene State College track team won three events at the Springfield College Invitational at rainy and cold Blake track on Saturday.
Throwing in the pouring rain, senior Bryan Kolacz (Brentwood, N.H.) won the hammer throw with an NCAA Division III Championship qualifying mark of 200'-00". It was the second-best throw in the event by the Owls former national champion and All-American. "Bryan had a great week of practice and carried it over to the meet," said KSC throwing Coach John Napolitano. "Considering the conditions, it was an amazing performance."
In women's field events, junior Keeley Moffitt (Guilford, Conn.) placed first in the discus with a throw of 107'-03". Senior Melissa Small (Saco, Maine) was fourth in the event (98'-10").
On the track, junior Kevin Hoyt won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 15:33.04.
In other men's events, seniors Corey Loonan (Sandwich, Mass.) and Jeff Trethewey (Merrimack, N.H.) placed second (9:59.09) and fourth (10:14.01) respectively in the 3,000 steeplechase. Sophomore Glenn Guilmette (Kensington, N.H.) was third in the javelin (188'-11") and freshman Angus Fisher (Northampton, Mass.) placed fourth in the discus (134'-03").
Freshman Erin Crawford (Townsend, Mass.) finished third in the 5,000 (19:15.95) and Janel Haggerty (Guilford, Conn.) had a busy afternoon, placing fifth in the 400 dash (1:02.34), seventh in the 100 hurdles (18.09) and high jump (4'-11").
In team scoring, the KSC men finished fifth with 50 points while the Owl women were seventh with 40 points. MIT won both men's and women's team titles.
Several Keene State runners competed at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J. on Friday. Senior Amy Knoblock (Plymouth, Mass.) (17:26.51) and junior Andrea Walsh (Bolton, Conn.) (17:31.49) improved their NCAA Championship provisional qualifying times in the 5,000. Senior Eric MacKnight (Newtown, Conn.) posted a personal best time of 14:44.52) in the men's 5K race. Tim Pipp (Keene, N.H.), MacKnight and Walsh will compete at the Penn Relays next Thursday.
