KEENE, N.H. 1/28/12 – A split squad of Keene State track and field athletes competed at the Boston University Invitational and the Southern Maine Invitational this weekend.
At Boston University, senior Paige Mills (Keene, N.H.) placed 19th in the 5,000 (17:16.97).
Junior Maggie Fitter (Branford, Conn.) finished 21st in the mile (5:00.49). Both were personal best and provisional NCAA championship qualifying times.
Keene State's distance medley relay team of senior Sarah Titus (Derry, N.H.), freshman Melanie Escalante (New Canaan, Conn.), Mills and Fitter also had a strong showing, clocking a time of 12:03, three seconds faster than last year at this junction of the season.
In the men's field, senior Kevin Hoyt (Newtown, Conn.) posted a time of 15:01 while junior Thomas Paquette (Bolton, Conn.) touched the tape at 15:11. Meanwhile, sophomore Ryan Widzgowski (Camden, Me.) had a time of 8:43 in the 3,000 race. The trio posted personal best times in their respective races and qualified for the New England and ECAC Championships.
Up at Southern Maine, sophomore Jian Giglia (Damariscotta, Me.) won the 600 (1:29.47) while junior Brett Mastrangelo (Millis, Mass.) and freshman Roger Wilkie (Little Compton, R.I.) placed 2nd (2:04.50) and third (2:05.13) respectively in the 800 race. The Owls' 4x400 relay team of seniors Sarbjit Singh (Lebanon, N.H.) and Elias Grijalva (Manchester, N.H.), junior Doug Dombrowik (Fitzwilliam, N.H.), and Wilkie placed second with a time of 3:38.14.
In field events, sophomore Evan Miller (Granville, N.Y.) was second in the high jump (6'-02.00"), Singh took third in the triple jump (40'-02.25"), and freshman Ben Keach (Newfields, N.H.) was third in the shot-put with a season best mark of 45'-10.00".
The Keene State men placed third in the team scoring with 95.5 points. Bates won the team title with 136 points.
Freshman Mary Dematteo (Northford, Conn.) had the best showing for the KSC women on the track, placing fourth in the 600 (1:46.60).
In field events, senior Keeley Moffitt (Guilford, Conn.) placed fourth in the weight throw with a personal best mark of 43'-09.25").
In team scoring, the Owls tallied 34 points for sixth place. Springfield captured the championship with 165.5 points.
Keene State will compete next Saturday at the Dartmouth Invitational.
