Box Score 2 KEENE, N.H. 10/20/12 – The Keene State College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at Spaulding Gym on Saturday. The Owls found themselves on the winning and losing end of five game matches, defeating UMass-Dartmouth and falling to the University of New England.
In their opening match, Keene State College needed five games to defeat UMass-Dartmouth 3-2 (25-27, 25-15, 25-16, 17-25 and 15-9. KSC never trailed in the fifth and deciding game.
With the victory, the Owls (15-13, 4-2 LEC) secure third place in the upcoming LEC tournament and will host a quarterfinal match.
Returning to the team after missing last week's match against UMass-Boston, sophomore Sammy Dormio (Leesburg, Va.) led the Owls against UMD with 14 kills, two service aces, 11 digs and two blocks.
Freshman Kaylee Deluga (Dennis, Mass.) had 13 kills, one service ace, four digs, and two blocks while freshman Angela Silveri (Poughquag, N.Y.) finished with 10 kills and six digs.
Freshman Haley Willumsen (Shelter Island, N.Y.), with 30 assists, and Alexis Michal, with 18 assists, shared setting duties.
Freshman Stephanie Antoine (New Bedford, Mass.) had 18 kills, senior setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, Mass.)chipped in with 39 assists, and freshman Linsay Boulay (Swansea, Mass.) finished with 17 digs for the Corsairs (19-5, 1-4 LEC).
In its second match, Keene State lost a five game marathon to the University of New England 3-2 (25-16, 23-25, 22-25, 25-21 and 13-15). In the deciding game, KSC fell behind 12-14 on a block by senior Jackie Stone( Saginaw, Mich.) and senior Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) . A kill by Deluga got the Owls to within one point (13-14), but the tandem of Stone and Curran blocked an attack by Dormio for the winning point.
Sliveri had 13 kills, six digs and seven blocks against the Nor'easters (14-8). Deluga added 11 kills, three service aces, seven digs and three blocks. Dormio finished with nine kills, 16 digs and four blocks.
Freshman Kaitlin Boyer (West Greenwich, R.I.) had 15 digs and the setting team of Willumsen and Michal finished with 22 and 21 assists respectively.
Curran and junior Angie Brunette (No. Andover, Mass.) each had 15 kills for UNE. Stone had 17 kills and junior setter Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) finished with 40 assists.
Keene State is at Southern Maine on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
