Box Score 2 SCHENECTADY, N.Y. 10/6/12 – The Keene State College women's volleyball team won a pair of five game matches at the Union College Interleague Challenge at the Viniar Athletic Center in Schenectady, N.Y. on Saturday.
Getting over the .500 mark for the first time this season, Keene State (12-10) finished second in the challenge, going 3-1 in the tournament. Skidmore won all four of its matches to win the tournament. "All these teams have really gaudy records, but we found out we can play with them," said KSC Coach Weiner. "We absolutely fit here."
The Owls defeated host Union in their first match of the day 3-2 (25-23, 25-10, 23-25, 21-25 and 15-10). Freshman Angela Silveri (Poughquag, N.Y.) had a season high 21 kills to go with two blocks and freshman Kaitlin Boyer (West Greenwich, R.I.) finished with season best 34 digs and also had three service aces to lead the Owls.
In its second match of the day, KSC edged SUNY-Potsdam 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 18-25, and 15-9). Freshman Kaylee Deluga (Dennis, Mass.) who was named to the All-Tournament team, finished with a season high 17 kills and 18 digs. "Kaylee is an intriguing player," said Weiner. "She has amazingly good volleyball instincts and is only going to get better."
Silveri had another fine match with 15 kills. Sophomore Samantha Branning (Glastonbury, Conn.) added five blocks while freshman setter Alexis Michal (Windham, N.H.) chipped in with 21 digs and two service aces.
Keene State travels to Western Conn. for a Little East match on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
