Trinity tips Owls on last-second shot 51-49

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. 11/20/12 – Junior Abigail Hancock (Casco, Maine) recovered an errant inbounds pass and hit lay-up as time expired enabling Trinity College to defeat Keene State College 51-49 in a non-conference women's basketball game played at Spaulding Gym on Tuesday.

The Owls battled back from an 11 point second half deficit only to the game on Hancock's buzzer-beating basket.  "I'm proud of the kids the way we battled back, but we shouldn't have been in that situation," said Boucher.  "We created our own misfortune. We turned the ball over way too many times and that last turnover was the microcosm of what happened in the course of the game. We have to learn from this and hopefully get better."

Keene State (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season while Trinity College improved to 2-1.

Taking an early 13-6 lead on a drive by senior Siobhan Carnell (Quincy, Mass.), Keene State couldn't hold the lead.

Trinity scored the last six points of the first half, the final two coming on a beat- the-clock basket by junior Shantel Hanniford (Nantucket, Mass.), that gave the Bantams a 26-23 lead at the break. Trinity took the lead despite committing 18 first half turnovers.

Trinity continued its run, scoring the first eight points of the second half to take a 34-23 lead on a lay-up by junior Moriah Sweeney (Ramsey, N.J.).

Struggling most of the game to find her shot, Carnell heated up in the second half, scoring three straight baskets to pull the Owls even 40-all with 8:32 to play.

After Trinity went up 49-46, Keene State tied the game again on a three-pointer by freshman Ryanne Williams (Norwell, Mass.).

KSC had several chances to take the lead in its next possession that included offensive rebounds by Carnell and Williams.  Freshman Laurie Allen (Medford, Mass.) was finally fouled going to the basket, but missed both her free throws.

After sophomore Christan Wojtas (Amherst, N.H.) missed a jumper, the Owls got the ball back on a Bantam turnover with 4.7 seconds to play.

Attempting to get the errant inbounds pass, Allen slapped the ball toward the Trinity basket.  Hancock got control of the ball and put in a lay-up as time expired to give the Bantams the win.

Carnell led the Owls' comeback, scoring 12 of her team-high 16 points in the second half to go with seven rebounds and three steals.  Sophomore points guard Rachael Brucks (Suwanee, Geo.) also scored in double figures for KSC with 10 points. Williams pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to go with seven points.

Junior Taylor Murtaugh (New York, N.Y.) led the Bantams with a game-high 22 points.  Freshman MacKenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) and Hanniford each had seven rebounds.

Keene State shot 32% from the field (17-54), hit five of 19 three-point shots (26%) and connected on 10 of its 15 attempts (67%) from the line.

The Owls return to Spaulding Gym next Tuesday (Nov. 27) for a non-conference game against 11th- ranked Amherst College.
