Box Score KEENE, N.H. 11/27/12 – Ranked 9th in the latest USA Today Division III poll, the Amherst College women's basketball team posted a 65-42 non-conference victory over Keene State College at Spaulding Gym on Tuesday night.
Freshman Christan Wojtas (Amherst, N.H.) scored a season high 13 points to go along with a team high six rebounds to lead the Owls (2-2). Freshman Ryanne Williams (Norwell, Mass.) also finished in double-figures with 10 points.
Senior Bridget Crowley (Hampden, Mass.) scored a game high 15 points, freshman Haley Zwecker (Atlanta, Geo.) finished with 14 points and sophomore Savannah Holness (Middlebury, Conn.) pulled down a game best 10 rebounds, helping Amherst (4-0) remain undefeated.
The Lord Jeffs scored the first nine points of the game and took a 17-2 lead on a layup by freshman Marley Giddens (Irvington, N.Y.) at the 9:06 mark.
The Owls cut their deficit down to 10 points (25-15) on a jumper by Williams with 2:49 to go. The Lord Jeffs scored the last nine points to take a 34-15 halftime lead.
Amherst extended its advantage in the second half, leading by as much as 28 points on a pair of free throws by sophomore Megan Robertson (Tewksbury, Mass.) with just 5:08 remaining in regulation
The Owls struggled to get their shots off against a taller, quicker and physically stronger Lord Jeff team that blocked 11 shots and made 11 steals. KSC shot just 28% from the field (14-50), hit five of 14 three-point attempts (42%) and connected on nine of 14 shots from the line (64%).
Amherst, which won the battle of the boards 43-33, shot 41% from the field (24-59). They were just 3-18 (17%) from behind the arc and 14-21 (67%) from the line.
"I felt we played tentative," said KSC Coach Keith Boucher. "We tried to prepare for their pressure but you can only say something so many times until they actually experience it. Hopefully we'll learn a valuable lesson from this."
Keene State travels to UMass-Dartmouth for its first Little East Conference game of the season on Saturday (1 p.m.).
