Keene State falls to Corsairs 58-48

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MASS.  11/30/12 – Playing its first Little East Conference and road games of the season, the Keene State College women's basketball team lost to UMass-Dartmouth 58-48 in a rare Friday night game for the Owls at the Tripp Athletic Center in North Dartmouth Mass.

After winning its first two games of the season, Keene State (2-3, 0-1LEC) has dropped its last three games.  UMass-Dartmouth improves to 4-1 and 1-0 in league play.

Freshman Christan Wojtas (Amherst, N.H.) scored a season high 15 points and senior Siobhan Carnell (Quincy, Mass.) finished with 13 points and a team high seven rebounds to lead the Owls.

Sophomore Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, Mass.) scored 15 points; freshman Beth Castantini (Newburyport, Mass.) had 13 points and junior Erika Bornemann (Canton, Mass.) finished with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Corsairs. 

Keene State fell behind early and made several second half runs trying to catch the Corsairs.  Trailing 29-18 at the half, the Owls opened the second half with 11-5 run, getting their deficit down to five points (34-29) on a three-pointer  by freshman Ryanne Williams (Norwell, Mass.) and back-to-back lay-ups by Wojtas. 

After the Corsairs built their lead back up to nine points (40-31) on consecutive jumpers by junior Erica Batchelder (Stoughton, Mass.), KSC made one last push to get back in the game, cutting the Corsairs lead down to three points (48-45) when junior Carly Kiernan (Topsfield, Mass.) found sophomore Courtney Roberts (Sutton, Mass.) down low for a layup with 3:48 to play.

UMass-Dartmouth outscored the Owls 10-3 the rest of the way to post the win.

Both teams struggled to score, especially from behind the arc and at the line.  Keene State was 4-15 (27%) from behind the arc and 4-10 (40%) from the line.  UMass-Dartmouth hit six of its 24 three-point attempts (25%) and was 6-13 (46%) from the line.

Keene State will be at RPI on Tuesday (6 p.m.).
