BOSTON, Mass. 2/25/2012 - Senior
Kevin Hoyt (Newtown, Conn.) and freshman
Melanie Escalante (New Canaan, Conn.) each posted strong times to lead the Owls at the Open New England Championships on Friday and Saturday at Boston University.
Hoyt's time of 14:40.04 was good enough for a sixth place finish in the 5,000 meter race, and is a strong provisional time for the NCAA Division III Championships in a few weeks.
Escalante had her strong performance in the 500 meter race, breaking the school record on Friday afternoon in a time of 1:15.74 and qualifying for finals on Saturday. In the finals, the freshman ran a time of 1:16.49 for a fifth place finish.
Also having a solid performance for the men, the team of
Ryan Widzgowski (Camden, Maine),
Sarbjit Singh (Lebanon, NH),
Brett Mastrangelo (Millis, Mass.) and
Chris Plankey (Bristol, NH) qualified for the ECAC Championships with a time of 10:23.03 and a 16th place finish.
Next weekend the Owls head to ECAC Championships at the Armory in the Bronx, N.Y.
