Keene State Women capture Smith College Beynon Invitational

NORTHAMPTON, MASS 1/19/13 – The Keene State College women's track team captured the Smith College Beynon Invitational Track Meet in Northampton, Mass. on Saturday.

The Owl women tallied 176 points to finish ahead of Merrimack College (158.50 points).

Senior Janel Haggerty (Guilford, Conn.) had a big day for the Owls, winning the long jump (16'-03.25"), and placing second in the 600 (1:46.29), 60-meter hurdles (9.46) and the high jump (5'-01.75").

Senior Maggie Fitter (Branford, Conn.) won the mile (5:21.70) and placed second in the 800 (2:25.34). Freshman Allison Brady (Weymouth, Mass.) also won the 1,000 (3:12.65).

In other track races, sophomore Kaitlin Wheeler (Exeter, N.H.) was second in the 1,000 (3:13.75) and third in the 600 (1:47.09). Freshman Samantha Goldsmith (Derry, N.H.) placed second in the mile (5:26.09) while senior Lisa Sander (South Windsor, Conn.) was third in the 3,000 (11:47.07).

In field event, KSC took the top-two sports in the shot-put.  Junior Sarah DiTonno (Wakefield, Mass.) won with a mark of 36'-03.50") and senior Whitney Cyr (Milford, Mass.) was second (34'-02.25").  Sophomore Courtney Hartwell (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) paced second in the weight throw (40'-10.25"). Freshman Lucia Martin (Swanzey, N.H.) was third in the pole vault (8'-06.25").

Keene State finished third in the five-team men's field with 129 points.  WPI won the team title with 215 points.

Junior Ryan Widzgowski (Camden, Maine) led the Owl men, winning the 1,000 (2:39.19) and taking second in the 600 (1:24.03). 

Senior Thomas Paquette (Bolton, Conn.) won the 3,000 (8:59.41) while senior Chris Plankey (Bristol, N.H.) finished first in the mile (4:28.41).  Plankey and senior Andrew Sears (Derry, N.H.) finished second (2:02.07) and third (2:04.48) respectively in the 800.  Paquette was second in the mile (4:29.46) and Sears was right behind him in third place (4:31.47).

Sophomore Ben Keach (Newfields, N.H.) another good day in the shot put circle, winning the event with a mark of 46'-2.00".

Keene State will send a split squad to Boston University and Springfield College next Saturday.
