Box Score KEENE, N.H. 1/22/13 – The cold-shooting Keene State College women's basketball team dropped a 56-38 Little East Conference game to Eastern Conn. State University at Spaulding Gym on Tuesday night.
The Owls (7-10, 2-6) saw their two game winning streak come to an end. Coming off a career high 34 point performance against UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday, senior Siobhan Carnell (Quincy, Mass.) finished with a game high 20 points, but also struggled, connecting on just six of her 19 shots from the field.
"We got two players who score for us and they took one (Christan Wojtas) out tonight and they were triple-teaming Siobhan Carnell and she still got 20 points," said KSC Coach Keith Boucher. "But somebody has to put the ball in the basket.
Sophomore Kristina Forsman (Newington, Conn.) scored 15 points and freshman Jill Ritrosky (Pittsfield, Mass.) finished with 10 points and a game high seven rebounds for Eastern Conn. (6-12, 4-4 LEC).
After scoring the first six points of the game, the Owls hit a cold streak, falling behind 22-14 on a three-pointer by Forsman at the 3:55 mark. The score didn't change the rest of the low-scoring half. The Owls, who shot just 22% from the field in the half, went the final 4:46 without scoring a point.
The Warriors maintained their lead early in the second half. A three-pointer by freshman Victoria Pfohl (Trumbull, Conn.) made it a 29-21game at the 14:20 mark.
Getting the ball inside the Owls cut their deficit to two points on several occasions, but Eastern held off the challenge. Freshman Brianna Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) hit consecutive jumpers and Forsman knocked down a three-pointer from the left of the circle to push the Warriors lead up to 13 points (47-34) with 6:29 to play.
"When we got the lead down to two points, we started missing shots and we let our offense affect our defense and consequently they took advantage of it," said Boucher.
The ball wasn't falling for the Owls, who shot 13-51 (26%) from the field and hit just two of their 14 three-pointers (14%). They did have a good game at the line, going 10-11 (91%). One-and-done most of the game, Keene State lost the battle of the boards 43-24.
The Warriors went 18-46 (39%) from the field and 5-16 (31%) from behind the arc and were a perfect 15-15 (100%) from the line.
Keene State will be at Middlebury College on Thursday ( 6 p.m.).
